Love Courbe
by Monique Williams
As an aspiring fashion designer and maker I’ve always been
inspired by people, I’ve always had a passion to improve the faces and
expectations of fashion especially in the plus size area of fashion. As a
designer I want to inspire and encourage young women like myself to break the
boundaries of fashion and believe every woman no matter what shape or size is
beautiful in their own way. This I suppose is what inspired me with my Current
project for the Cyrenians Charity based in Coventry. After going to the shop on
numerous occasions it was clear to me that there wasn’t a large area or amount
of clothing offered for the plus size customer, so I decided to use this
opportunity for my collection.
Inspired by 80’s Acid wash denim with tie dye elements I wanted to create a collection of jeans and shorts for the curvier customer. I wanted my collection to have a modern twist on the Acid wash trend which I was able to show with my photo shoot for the collection. One thing I love about fashion is the way it celebrates individuality and identity, I love how fashion can allow you to be anybody you want and to be and to me it’s the best form of expression. With all that being said the one ting that I feel really makes me sad about the industry is the lack of courage to stand for something that is not always the norm, I feel like there are so many designers that have the platform and opportunity to promote plus size fashion in a healthy and inspiring way but I feel like they don’t care enough to do so. This is something I really hope changes in the future of the fashion industry. I love the work of Viktor and Rolf, Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen and I’m also really inspired by Monif C. Right now I’m really inspired by colour and print (hopefully print design is what I may specialize in) and I’m loving the monochrome takeover with checks and stripes.
